Some words of sense from a non-blogpowerer

Over on my own site, one commenter said something which I thought it was worth re-posting here:

Hi James, I'm not a Blogpowerer, but I do read several of the sites on a regular basis and have considered signing up. The recent debate has been very interesting and does test our natural instinct to protect free expression, while condemning some of the views expressed (i.e. BNP support).

Perhaps there is a solution though. It's simple too: I suggest you don't compel members to carry the automated blogpower blogroll on their site. If you just ask members to include the banner and link to defendingtheblog, then people show their support for the collective small blog movement, without needing to have a direct link on their page they disapprove of.

That way, people retain control over the links on their own blogs and can choose to link to fellow blogpowerers they like, but not the ones they don't. I realise it will take longer to manually update a blog with links, but I should think any people unhappy with the current system would think it a small price to pay.

Of course, any member would also be able to include the full automated blogroll too and this would remain on the blogpower site as a central connecting point for all members. I really applaud the effort that you have put in to set this up as I think it is important for smaller bloggers to spread the word and support each other. It would be such a shame if it all collapsed acrimoniously.

Best of luck sorting it out, Chris G

Nice solution

I thought that was already the case.

However, the link still remains, only one click further removed.

In essence, the whole internet is linked. That's what Internet means! So why are we getting so righteous about all this!

The Labour party has done a lot more to piss me off than the BNP has ever managed. So have the Tories for that matter. But I'm not getting in a huff about the Tory supporters on the blog roll.

I think what Chris G says makes a lot of sense. Being a technical dumbwit, as you know, James and Ian, I didn't realise the blogroll updated automatically and all that at first so I entered the sites that had the roll, not just the banner, manually. If I went back to this, but still carried the banner, I could avoid listing any site that offends me. It would take a little more work but I wouldn't mind that. I'm confused again now: Liz says she voted for categorisation but where is this option in the poll?? Or am I just being stupid again? Whatever happens, though, please don't let us disband!

err..that is what I have done the whole time!

Odd question but it suddenly occured to me looking at the poll and having voted- when are we closing the polls? Not to put pressure to say they should close now, but presumably at some point, the poll closes and a decision is taken- when is that? Or have I just been stupid and missed something that was said somewhere else.

No, you haven't been stupid. It officially closes tomorrow, Saturday. I am consulting the other two now about running a second, more specific one about the mechanics of it. I'll run a post now on this.

James, you really ought to take a look at what that thug has been doing on his own site. My blog as Blog of the Day indeed. Stupid, and silly.

He tries very hard to appear reasonable, rational, even liberal on some issues - but his behaviour proves the lie, and his immaturity.

He's tried to goad and intimidate me, but I have found his actions only reinforce my long-held beliefs and do nothing, not that there's anything a BNP member could do, to change my stance.

I've flagged AND reported his blog as it breaches the ToS for Blogger in that it contains hateful, racist content. So simply put, you would be better served with something akin to various points in that ToS documentation. It would mean this problem would not only go away, but need never arise again.

And others who object to that site would be well advised to flag and report it as well.

Strikes me you're turning blue trying to be inclusive when, simply put, you can't and shouldn't be inclusive of wannabe thugs and bullies whatever the reason for their behaviour.

As ever, I wish you every success. x

Yeah I mean giving awards out is so thuggish. I don't think you will win blog of the month though. my readers decide who wins that.

I don't lie about any of my beliefs. Why would I lie online where no one knows me? It doesn't exactly make any sense now does it?

I also never said I was that mature. I am 19.

He's tried to goad and intimidate me

I tried to intimidate you how? By making you blog of the week? Do you get scared a lot?

No it doesn't. I have never said anything racist. Can you point to my racist and hateful posts please?

As with holocaust deniers, I recommend anyone in denial of anything within themselves look to themselves for answers, so no. Look at your own blog content. Look at the people you choose to be aligned with. Look at the blogs you link to on your own blogroll - one assumes you do so because you agree with them, enjoy what they have to say, support them and so on.

You have chosen to be deliberately divisive and inflammatory in how you have conducted yourself on your own blog, not only in relation to your actions regarding my own site but also in how you write about Blogpower. As James has pointed out to you elsewhere, you seem very much to talk of the initiative in terms of it being the 'other' and you a separate thing from it. Odd coming from someone who joined it in the first place. Odd you take such apparent delight in the aftermath of that.

I remember back in my student days protesting in London outside the BNP HQ. This was back in the 90s when the de riguer uniform of BNP members was tight jeans, braces, bovver boots, skinheads and sneers. So what happened to all those lovely, lovely boys? Were they the first to be shipped out of the UK? Or did they get instructions to go out and buy posh suits with their dole cheques? I say 'dole' because having a misappropriated swastika on your forehead and other twisted tattoos kind of cuts down on the job opportunities. I will never, ever forget their hate-filled slogans, and their mocking of Stephen Lawrence, whose botched police investigation was the reason for our marching. I believe the phrase, repeated loudly from the front door of the BNP HQ, was 'the only good n****r is a dead n****r'. Oh yes. Clearly, that boy's death was a cause for celebration among your friends.

Of course you were a little boy back then. And no doubt sweet, making your mother proud for a time. But the point is, it ain't that long ago and there's no way the BNP has transformed its core beliefs since then, nor will it ever. It has only changed the window dressing. And enforced longer hair among its evangelists, no doubt causing shares in Doc Martins to take a slight hit until they became fashionable in wider, less offensive, circles.

Now, a leopard does not change its spots. People can learn the error of their ways and leave the BNP but the BNP does not, in its essentially poisonous nature, ever change. It cannot. It does not and will never embrace ethnic groups as being either British, or welcome in this country. It attacks people on the grounds of their being Muslim, branding all Muslims terrorists only because this serves the primary purpose of the BNP - to push for this country to become exclusively white. This country has never been completely white. We are all a pot pourri of racial backgrounds and the earliest known involvement of black people in Britain dates back around a thousand years. So the white nation you dream of is not only offensive but revisionist. It has never even existed.

Allowing a BNP member into any organisation of merit, to any degree, affords that person and the party s/he proselytises the opportunity to claim that much-desired goal of legitimacy. This is so even if the organisation joined goes to great lengths to distance itself from having any connection to the individual views of its eclectic membership. Disassociation works against the political and social goals of the BNP - making it imperative that the likes of Blogpower say to the BNP: NEVER AGAIN.

And not here.

I talk about this blog as being the other. I am not the author of this. Anyway would it be any wonder I talk as if I am separate from it when people are making it clear that they don’t want me just for being a member of a political party? If you don’t want me to talk about it as if I am separate from it maybe the people here should stop trying to make me feel unwelcome?

So what happened to all those lovely, lovely boys? Were they the first to be shipped out of the UK? Or did they get instructions to go out and buy posh suits with their dole cheques?

They could be in many places including the political parties that spawned from the BNP that still wanted forced repatriation. These parties include the White Nationalist Party, England First Party, British Peoples Party, New Nationalist Party and others that still hold those beliefs but did not spawn from the BNP like November 9th Society, National Front and others.

Of course you were a little boy back then. And no doubt sweet, making your mother proud for a time. But the point is, it ain't that long ago and there's no way the BNP has transformed its core beliefs since then

Look at their manifesto they obviously have. Even if the leadership are racist they have successfully convinced a lot of people that they are not. So much so infact that they have more than tripled their membership since Griffin became leader. These people may have bought into a lie but now these people are the majority and now these people now have voting rights within the party. So what might have been a lie at the beginning can no longer be a lie since the majority now believe in the objectives of that policy.

It attacks people on the grounds of their being Muslim, branding all Muslims terrorists only because this serves the primary purpose of the BNP

I think you will find that the BNP have not done that. Nick Griffin has said that he doesn’t believe most Muslims are terrorists HOWEVER he believes that Islam allows for terrorism.
